Beneath the Sunraysia Sky: Grape Growing Traditions and Riverfront Wines in Mildura

In Sunraysia, the vines run deep – in the soil, in the seasons, and in the stories told over a glass of something golden. This is grape country, where the sun doesn’t just shine, it ripens, nourishes, and defines. Here, rows of vines stretch out like ribbons across the landscape, their rhythm shaped by the river, the warmth, and the quiet determination of generations.

Grapes have long been part of the Sunraysia identity. Since the early 1900s, when irrigation brought new life to the region, this patch of Victoria has been growing fruit that travels across the country – and the world. The land here is generous, and the growers know it well. Red loam, rich sand, and that wide, endless sky come together to create ideal growing conditions – especially for table grapes, wine grapes, and dried fruit varieties that have become part of the region’s DNA.

The work is patient and seasonal – pruning in winter, bursting into leaf by spring, and harvesting under the heat of the late summer sun. It’s the kind of rhythm you feel in your bones. For many families, grape growing isn’t just a livelihood, it’s a legacy – handed down, weathered, celebrated. You can taste it in the fruit – sweet, crisp, sun-kissed.

Walk through the vines in January and you’ll see them heavy with fruit – green, crimson, black – glowing in the light. There’s something deeply grounding about it. Nature, held gently in balance by human hands. And in the cool sheds across the region, grapes are carefully packed for markets near and far – but also to be shared here, in Sunraysia, where they grow best.

Today, the region is known as one of Australia’s most productive grape-growing areas. Mildura alone produces a significant share of the country’s total grape volume – feeding both domestic demand and global exports. Yet even with scale, it still feels local. Still feels personal.

At roadside stalls, you’ll find growers selling bunches fresh from their farm. At cellar doors, you’ll sip wines that began life just metres from the glass in your hand. And for guests of Trentham Waters, there’s no need to travel far – Trentham Estate Winery sits right next door, perched on the river’s edge, serving award-winning wines in a setting as beautiful as the bottles they pour.

In Sunraysia, grape growing isn’t just something we do – it’s something we are. It’s part of the region’s pulse. And when you stay here, whether for a weekend or a while, you’ll find it in every view, every market visit, every crisp, sweet bite. It’s a story still being told – harvest by harvest, vine by vine.
