Welcome to Sunraysia: Australia’s Sun-Drenched Heartland

Welcome to Sunraysia: Australia’s Sun-Drenched Heartland

There’s a rhythm to life in Sunraysia. You’ll feel it in the golden light that stretches across the land, in the slow curl of the Murray River, and in the unmistakable warmth – of the climate, yes, but also the people.

Covering the far north-west of Victoria and spilling into parts of southwestern New South Wales, Sunraysia is more than just a destination – it’s a region steeped in legacy, cultivated by hands that knew how to work the land, and shaped by water, sunshine, and resilience. It’s Mildura and Wentworth, Red Cliffs and Robinvale. It’s orange groves and vineyards, houseboats and hot summer evenings. It’s the place where long lunches turn into longer stays.

The story of Sunraysia begins with the Murray. For the Latji Latji and Barkindji peoples, the river has always been sacred – an ancient lifeline and a source of food, community, and Dreaming. Their connection to this land continues to shape the region today, and it is with deep respect that we acknowledge their enduring custodianship.

In the late 1800s, the region was transformed by irrigation pioneers George and William Chaffey, whose vision turned dry plains into fertile fields. They saw what others missed – the potential in the soil, the promise in the sun. Their work laid the foundations for one of Australia’s most productive food bowls, giving rise to the citrus groves, vineyards, and stone fruit orchards that define

Sunraysia to this day.

Sunraysia is a place where the land gives generously. Mildura, the region’s beating heart, is famed for its food and wine scene – think boutique cellar doors, bustling produce markets, and sun-ripened fruit straight from the grower. You’ll find café culture woven into historic streetscapes, and chefs plating up with regional pride.

The river brings its own magic. Houseboats glide past red gums, paddle steamers whistle from another time, and local anglers cast for cod in the golden hours. For outdoor lovers, Sunraysia offers endless skies, winding walking trails, and national parks rich with desert flora and Mallee light.

From its early agricultural roots to today’s laid-back lifestyle and creative energy, Sunraysia has grown without losing its soul. It’s a region that still runs on community, where stories are shared over fences and festival stages come alive under starry skies.

Whether you’re here to unwind by the river, sip something local, or explore the stories behind this sun-drenched place – we invite you to linger, look deeper, and feel the quiet magic of Sunraysia for yourself.

Trentham Waters Resort is proud to call Sunraysia home. We invite you to discover this remarkable region – where the sunshine is generous, the river is never far, and the welcome is always warm.
